The Birdy Poetry Prize, by Meadowlark Books

Accepting Entries: May 1 to December 1

Final Deadline for Entries: December 1, Midnight

Entry Fee: $25

Prize: $500 cash, publication by Meadowlark Books, including 50 copies of the completed book

Guest Judge: Kansas Poet Laureate Kevin Rabas.

All entries will be considered for standard Meadowlark Books publishing contract offers, as well.  

Submission and contest entry fee of $25 must be received by December 1, midnight.

Finalists for The Birdy Poetry Prize will be notified and posted on our website in January 2019.

Full-length poetry manuscripts (55 page minimum, 90+ pages preferred) will be considered. Poems may be previously published in journals and/or anthologies, but not in full-length, single-author volumes. All poets are eligible to enter, regardless of publishing history.

Manuscript Preparation - Electronic Submissions (postal mail instructions below):
Electronic submissions must be submitted as a single Word (.doc or .docx) or Rich Text (.rtf) file. The author’s name should not appear anywhere on the document. Manuscript should include a title, a complete list of contents, and any section or division headings.

Before submitting the manuscript, $25 fee must be paid at the Meadowlark Online Bookstore or fee may be submitted by postal mail to Meadowlark Books, PO Box 333, Emporia, KS 66801 (note manuscript title on check).

In the body of the submission email, include the following:
  1. Payment confirmation # or date check mailed
  2. Author name
  3. Author contact, including mailing address, email address, phone number
  4. Title of manuscript
Submit manuscript as attachment to The subject line of the email should read, “The Birdy Poetry Prize Entry”

Manuscript Preparation - Postal Mail Submission:
The author’s name should appear only on a cover sheet. Printed manuscript should include a title, a complete list of contents, and any section or division headings.

The cover sheet should include the following:
  1. Author name
  2. Author contact, including mailing address, email address, phone number
  3. Title of manuscript
  4. Check or money order attached.

About the Judge
Kansas Poet Laureate (2017-2019) Kevin Rabas chairs the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Journalism at Emporia State and leads the poetry and playwriting tracks. He has nine books, including Bird’s Horn, Lisa’s Flying Electric Piano, a Kansas Notable Book and Nelson Poetry Book Award winner, Sonny Kenner’s Red Guitar, also a Nelson Poetry Book Award winner, Green Bike, Eliot’s Violin, Spider Face: stories, Songs for My Father: poems & stories, All That Jazz, and Late for Cymbal Line. Rabas writes regularly for Kansas City’s Jazz Ambassador Magazine (JAM). Rabas’s plays have been produced across Kansas and in North Carolina and San Diego. His work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize five times, and Rabas is the winner of the Langston Hughes Award for Poetry, the Victor Contoski Poetry Award, the Jerome Johanning Playwriting Award, and the Salina New Voice Award.
